East of San Dimas...

In Stephen King's "The Green Mile," a pile of old newspapers is said to be "stacked in a pair of Pomona orange crates," reader Will Plunkett alerts me.

So says David Allen in his last column. I've actually always wondered if anyone had written much about the "Inland Empire," as the much neglected neighborhoods that side of Los Angeles County deserve more attention (as do the cities in the San Gabriel Valley). Population-wise, and increasingly, politics-and-money-wise, the area demands attention. But the sort of attention that Allen points to is not exactly what I had in mind. Heh, heh, heh.

"Buffalo looked around slowly. `Been tryin' to figure out what this place reminds me of, Hondo. It's that ranch of your'n in California. Where we stayed before we went to fight with those people up north. Under a bluff just like this, creek and mesa spreading out ...'

Ahhh, those La Verne cowboys.
