Wanted: City Manager in Sierra Madre & Pomona

Joffe...focused on the need for someone with good communication skills that would be comfortable dealing with the very active and involved public in Sierra Madre. --Eric Blodgett, SM Weekly

Heh. That's the nice way of putting it.

Sierra Madre is using a firm (Mathis & Associates—scroll to see the Sierra Madre listing, see our version of the listing here) to find the right candidate. This is the norm for cities looking for a city manager. After all, city managers are the ones who usually really run the city. Once they are made a city manager, so long as everything goes alright, many of the same people sort of rotate around various cities in SoCal.

Oddly, to my knowledge, the city of Pomona isn't using a firm like Mathis to find a replacement for the retiring Doug Dunlap. This is abnormal behavior; one wonders why. Perhaps it's no big deal; perhaps they already know that they are going to hire someone internally.

The replacement search for Doug should be with a firm..Lord knows, we need a good City Manager this time who is not leaving with a scandal following him!
As a retired Pomona employee, who still keeps in close touch with my former staffers, I am saddened to see this city becomming a laughingstock because of Doug. I was hearing about this story about Doug and his young girlfriend from several city employees---- many months before it hit your blog...I am surprised the press has not picked up on it.

In my opinion, Doug should do the city a favor and leave now...not in 6 months...and without his taxpayer paid for "package"...and we should hire the best person we can find. How about a woman City Manager this time?

Regarding the Sierra Madre gig, a raffle would be an interesting approach. For $20 you'd get your name put in a hat and a chance to win a six figure job. If 5,000 people enter the draw it would pay the winner's salary for almost an entire year.

That and you could send the fire department out for pizza any time you like.

Mathis is a waste! There are better and more professional organizations out there. He is a shrink, not a headhunter! For the amount of money SM wants to pay all they will get is another CM trainee who will put in a few years then off to a real city. Or a retiree who is collecting a pension and wants a few extra dollars. If they could get a decent CM to keep the Council in line, maybe all this Measure V nonsense would never had wasted everyones time! Rick Cole where are you ........

Anon. may be right indeed about Mathis, but my point is its odd for Pomona to go without a firm in its CM hunt.

Rick Cole--heh, yeah, that'd be nice, but how are you going to convince a fledgling Cole to go to Sierra Madre?

And speaking of Cole, why don't any of the Foothill Cities CMs have a blog like he does up in Ventura?

http://www.ci.ventura.ca.us/cmblog/

Can you imagine--a city manager in these parts with a snazzy blog.

Ed's got a point too. Hell, everyone in Sierra Madre thinks they should be the City Manager anyhow...

And I'd be interested to hear from pomona jose's former staffers about why Pomona didn't hire a firm.

Word is that they already have one outside candidate that our fine Mayor wants...and one strong inside candidate who is an assistant city manager (female!!)
They started looking before Doug announced his "retirement"...

what does that tell y'all?

I think they should just have Doug make sure that his girlfriend gets his old job!!

I tend to agree with anonymous. If a city wants a decent CM, it should walk away from Mathis in a straight line. Odds are against a successful outcome.

Shut up and run for for office!!!

Mathis did an excellent job in the past assisting Sierra Madre in finding the last two City Managers -- both of whom were very qualified and highly competent. Perhaps if residents were more willing to tax themselves, the City might be able to attract and, more importantly, retain qualified individuals on the City staff.
