Pomona, Police, Prostitutes!

Now that's curious. Sunday, police in Pomona arrest 28 in a prostitution sting (Daily Bulletin). Monday, Mayor Norma Torres wants to "improve information flow between the police and City Council," by creating a new police commission (Monica Rodriguez, DB). No, not a police commission to oversee the department and alert folks to potential abuses by the men in blue (the likes of which can be found in Upland and Claremont). Just a commission to, you know, help the police and the mayor and the City Council all talk.

Apparently, phones just don't cut it in Pomona anymore. They need a commission. And hey, while you're creating a commission to communicate, why not go ahead and make it a whole department? How about the Pomona City Communication Department, a panel of effective communicators from the community ready to communicate at the drop of a hat. A volunteer communicating force, if you will, willing to brave the most awkward pause at city cocktail parties or the most perilous silence between offices. How has municipal government overcome the pernicious effects of the "communication gap" for so many years without the aid of abundant Dialogue Deputies, Mumble Ministers and a Secretary of Scuttlebutt?

Of course, the most shocking aspect of this whole affair is that the prostitution sting ran from 3pm-11pm; who on earth was cruising in search of jollies for dollars at three in the afternoon on Easter Sunday?
